Rochester Wrap

Rochester 2  (29-42)  Columbus 1

  • The Red Wings broke a four game losing streak with a very well pitched game by Ryan Mullins and good bullpen work along with a run scoring single by Jose Morales in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Dustin Martin for the winning run.  Ryan Mullins got the start for the Red Wings and was very good in this one and broke out of a little slump he had been on.  In his previous three starts he had given up 14 earned runs so it was a nice change of pace.  Mullins went seven innings and only gave up a run on five hits along with two walks and four strikeouts to lower his era on the year to 4.95.  Anthony Slama then came on and pitched awesome throwing two shutout innings on one hit along with a walk and two strikeouts to lower his era on the year to 1.52.  Kyle Waldrop then pitched a scoreless 10th inning to pick up his third win of the year without a loss along with a walk to lower his era on the year to 1.11.  Waldrop and Slama have developed into quite a pair at the end of the Red Wings bullpen this year and one of the only things that is worth talking about.  In 90 innings of work between the two of them they have only given up 13 earned runs and that is utterly amazing to have two guys at the end of the bullpen to be that dominant.  Imagine if Alex Burnett was there like he was supposed to before Clay Condrey got hurt.  The game would have been a six inning game.  However, it is amazing what those two have accomplished and I can’t imagine it will be long before the Twins will be forced to call up one if not both of them.

  • The Red Wings could not get much going against Columbus pitching in this one, but got the big hits in the 10th to win it.  Rochester scored just two runs on seven hits along with drawing a walk and leaving just four guys on base so it definitely was a pitchers duel.  The Red Wings were led offensively by Dustin Martin who went 2-4 at the plate with his seventh homerun and 48th rbi of the year along with his 16th double and scoring the winning run.  With the two hits it brought his average up to .288.  Jose Morales also went 2-4 with his 12th rbi of the year and driving in the winning run along with bringing his average up to .246.  Brian Dinkelman went 2-3 at the plate with a walk to bring his average up to .283.  Jason Repko also contributed a base hit in the winning cause for the Red Wings last night.

  • The Miracle are counting the days until the end of the dreadful first half of play as they lost another doubleheader to Palm Beach and are now 0-9 against Palm Beach this year.  With the two losses that increases the Miracle’s losing streak up to a season high eight games.  In game one the Miracle got a great pitching performance from staff ace Liam Hendriks, but wasted it in a 1-0 loss.  Hendriks went the whole way giving up a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the loss and drop his record on the year with the Miracle to 4-2.  Hendriks ended up going 6.1 innings and gave up an unearned run on eight hits along with seven strikeouts.  Hendriks has been awesome this year and has really elevated his stock in the Twins eyes.  His walk to strikeout rate is unbelievable and if you count his time in Beloit he has walked just nine batters in 84.2 innings while striking out a very impressive 83 batters.  I admit I didn’t think he could be this good going into the year and now he is a boneafied top pitching prospect and he is only 21 years old so the sky is the limit.  In game two the offense still did not get anything going, but this time the defense let them down and the pitching staff could not pitch around it in a 12-1 loss in the nightcap.  Bruce Pugh came off the disabled list and got the start for the Miracle and was not great, but his defense did not help him either.  Pugh only lasted 1.1 innings and gave up seven runs on five hits although only three of the runs were earned along with three strikeouts to take the loss and drop his record on the year to 2-5 and see his era rise to 3.95.  Bruce Pugh was pitching as good as anybody in the system before his injury and I expect it is going to take him some time to get back in the groove again so just be patient with him.  Steve Blevins then came on and got the last two outs of the second, but also gave up a run on two hits along with a walk and a strikeout to raise his era on the year to 7.71.  Bobby Lanigan also returned from the disabled list and pitched two innings and gave up two unearned runs on one hit along with a walk to lower his era down to 2.51.  Jose Gonzalez then came on and finished the game and went the last two innings and gave up two runs on three hits along with a walk and two strikeouts to raise his era on the year to 1.29.

  • In game one the Miracle offense really could do nothing against Palm Beach pitching.  Fort Myers did not score a run on only two measly hits along with drawing two walks and leaving eight guys on base.  In a game this close you can’t leave eight guys on base as there is only so long the pitching staff can hold down an offense like Palm Beach possesses.  Nick Romero committed his sixth error of the year in the loss  The Miracle were led offensively by Nathan Hanson who went 1-3 at the plate.  Nick Romero also went 1-3 at the plate in the loss for the Miracle.  In game 2 the Miracle atleast got a run off Palm Beach pitching, but could not get much more than that.  Fort Myers scored one run on seven hits along with drawing three walks and leaving eight guys on base.  Esterlin De Los Santos had a tough night in the field as he committed three errors and now on the year he has nine in only 29 games with the Miracle.  The Miracle were led offensively by Nick Romero who went 3-3 at the plate with his 17th rbi of the year and brought his average up to .221.  Brian Dozier, Nathan Hanson, Deibinson Romero, and Drew Thompson each contributed a base hit in the losing cause for the Miracle.

  • Tonight, the Miracle first finish off a suspended game with Palm Beach and then have their regularly scheduled game with the Cardinals.  In the regularly scheduled game Dan Osterbrock gets the start for the Miracle.  The festivities begin at 5:35pm in Palm Beach as the Miracle try to break their eight game losing streak and get ready for the second half.
